Hari Gawai atau Gawai Dayak merupakan perayaan yang dirayakan di Sarawak pada 1 Jun setiap tahun. Ia adalah kedua-dua majlis agama dan sosial.

Gawai perkataan ertinya upacara atau perayaan manakala Dayak adalah nama kolektif untuk kumpulan-kumpulan etnik asli di Sarawak (dan jiran Indonesia Kalimantan): Iban, juga dikenali sebagai Dayak Laut dan rakyat Bidayuh, juga dikenali sebagai Tanah Dayak.

Oleh itu, Gawai Dayak bermaksud "Dayak Festival". Dayak akan melawat rakan-rakan dan saudara mereka pada hari ini. Lawatan itu lebih dikenali sebagai "ngabang" dalam bahasa Iban. Mereka yang terlalu jauh untuk melawat akan menerima kad ucapan.

Ia bermula kembali pada tahun 1957 dalam forum radio yang dipegang oleh Encik Ian Kingsley, program radio penganjur. Ini menimbulkan banyak minat di kalangan masyarakat Dayak.

Cara sambutan berbeza-beza dari tempat ke tempat. Penyediaan bermula awal. Tuak (arak beras) adalah dibru (sekurang-kurangnya satu bulan sebelum perayaan) dan makanan tradisional seperti penganan (kuih dari tepung beras, gula dan santan) disediakan. Sebagai pendekatan hari besar, semua orang akan sibuk dengan umum membersihkan dan menyediakan makanan dan kuih-muih. Pada Gawai Hawa, beras pulut adalah dikukus dalam buluh (ngelulun pulut).

Di rumah panjang, tikar baru akan dibentangkan di ruai (galeri terbuka yang berlangsung melalui panjang keseluruhan rumah panjang). Dinding Kacip paling (bilik) dan ruai dihiasi dengan Pua Kumbu Pua Kumbu (selimut tradisional). Satu lawatan untuk membersihkan tanah perkuburan juga dijalankan dan tawaran yang ditawarkan kepada orang mati. Selepas lawatan itu adalah penting untuk mandi sebelum masuk ke rumah panjang untuk menghindari nasib malang.

Sambutan ini bermula pada petang 31 Mei. Di rumah panjang Iban yang paling, ia bermula dengan satu majlis dipanggil Muai Antu Rua (untuk membuang semangat tamak), menandakan gangguan bukan semangat nasib malang dalam perayaan. Dua kanak-kanak atau lelaki setiap mengheret a chapan (jelasnya bakul) akan lulus setiap bilik keluarga. Setiap keluarga akan melemparkan beberapa artikel yang tidak diingini ke dalam bakul. Perkara-perkara yang tidak diingini akan dibuang ke tanah dari hujung rumah panjang untuk semangat nasib malang.

Sekitar 6:00 atau matahari terbenam, miring (upacara) akan berlaku. Sebelum majlis itu, gendang rayah (ritual music) dilakukan. Ketua Perayaan terima kasih tuhan untuk tuaian yang baik, dan meminta petunjuk, rahmat dan hidup selagi dia gelombang a ayam bujang lebih persembahan. Beliau kemudian ayam bujang pengorbanan dan darah yang sedikit digunakan bersama-sama dengan tawaran.

Setelah upacara persembahan selesai, makan malam kemudian berkhidmat di ruai. Sejurus sebelum tengah malam, satu perarakan naik dan turun ruai tujuh kali dipanggil Ngalu Petara (menyambut tuhan semangat) dilakukan. Dalam perarakan ini, ratu cantik untuk memilih ratu pesta dan raja (Kumang & Keling Gawai) kadangkala dijalankan. Sementara itu, minuman, kuih-muih tradisional dan makanan dihidangkan.

Pada tengah malam, gong adalah dipukul untuk memanggil celebrants perhatian. Ketua rumah panjang (tuai rumah) atau Ketua Festival akan membawa semua orang untuk minum Ai Pengayu (biasanya tuak untuk sepanjang hayat) dan pada masa yang sama ingin satu sama lain "gayu-guru, gerai-nyamai" (sepanjang hayat, kesihatan dan kemakmuran) . Sambutan sekarang bertukar meriah dan kurang formal. Ada yang menari dengan memainkan muzik tradisional, yang lain akan menyanyikan pantun (syair). Di kawasan bandar, Dayak akan menganjurkan perhimpunan di pusat-pusat komuniti atau restoran untuk meraikan petang.

Aktiviti lain yang boleh ikuti beberapa hari lagi termasuk: zakar-berjuang perlawanan, dan sumpitan dan Ngajat pertandingan. Pada hari ini, 1 Jun, rumah orang Dayak dibuka kepada pelawat dan tetamu.

Secara tradisi, apabila tetamu tiba di rumah panjang, mereka diberi Tiki ai sebagai mengalu-alukan. Dari masa ke semasa, tetamu dihidangkan tuak. Ini akan dipanggil nyibur temuai yang bermaksud "menyiram tetamu".

Dayak Kristian biasanya menghadiri gereja massa terima kasih kepada Tuhan untuk tuaian yang baik.

Gawai Dayak perayaan boleh lepas selama beberapa hari. Ia juga pada masa ini bagi tahun itu perkahwinan Dayak banyak berlaku, kerana ia adalah salah satu yang jarang sekali berlaku apabila semua ahli-ahli pulang ke rumah panjang masyarakat nenek moyang mereka.

Sehingga 1962, kerajaan kolonial British enggan mengiktiraf Dayak Hari. Gawai Dayak secara rasminya diwartakan pada 25 September tahun 1964 sebagai cuti umum di tempat Hari Sarawak. Ia pertama kali disambut pada 1 Jun 1965 dan menjadi simbol perpaduan aspirasi, dan harapan masyarakat Dayak. Hari ini, ia merupakan sebahagian daripada kehidupan sosial Dayak. Ia merupakan hari kesyukuran menandakan hasil tuaian yang baik dan masa untuk merancang bagi musim penanaman aktiviti atau baru datang.

Sebagai permulaan, para pelanggan Tune Talk dijemput untuk menamakan badan kebajikan pilihan mereka dengan menghantar nama organisasi tersebut melalui khidmat pesanan ringkas (SMS) ke 7292 (R-A-Y-A). Proses penamaan ini bermula 23 Ogos lepas dan akan berakhir 5 September 2010.

Setelah itu, lima badan kebajikan dengan pencalonan tertinggi akan diumumkan di laman web Tune Talk iaitu www.tunetalk.com pada 6 September 2010 bagi membolehkan para pelanggan untuk mengundi badan kebajikan pilihan mereka. Proses pengundian akan dibuka sehingga 11 September dan organisasi yang mendapat undi terbanyak akan memenangi dana yang diperuntukkan Tune Talk.

Setiap SMS yang dihantar ke 7292 akan dikenakan caj 10 sen.

ALOR SETAR - Kehadiran Ramadan yang mulia ini seolah-olah tidak membawa sebarang makna bagi pelacur dan pondan serta pelanggan mereka yang kebanyakannya beragama Islam apabila tidak segan silu melakukan tawar menawar di lokasi baru mereka di perkarangan Stadium Darulaman.

Pelacur dan pondan terbabit dipercayai baru menjadikan pekarangan stadium itu sebagai `port' mereka berikutan kawasan lama di sekitar Stesen Keretapi Alor Setar kini dibangunkan untuk projek landasan elektrik berkembar Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB).

Tinjauan malam kelmarin juga mendapati kira-kira 20 pelacur dan pondan berusia antara 20-an hingga 40-an berlegar di situ mencari pelanggan yang kebanyakannya datang dengan kereta dan motosikal.

Apa yang dikesalkan mereka kebanyakannya beragama Islam itu sedikit pun tidak rasa bersalah melakukan perbuatan terkutuk itu di bulan yang mulia ini, termasuk pelanggan mereka yang ketagih seks dan tidak dapat membendung gelodak nafsu serakah, walaupun di bulan puasa ini.

Pelacur dan pondan yang berpakaian menjolok mata itu dilihat menunggu di kawasan yang agak gelap di situ dan akan melakukan tawar menawar apabila ada pelanggan sama ada berkereta atau bermotosikal datang.

Seorang pengunjung, Ahmad Shafie, 54, berkata dia tidak menyangka ada kegiatan pelacuran di perkarangan stadium itu kerana ia adalah lokasi tumpuan ramai, terutama dengan adanya bazar lewat pagi dan gerai menjual pakaian untuk Aidilfitri ini.

"Saya datang bersama keluarga untuk membeli-belah sempena Aidilfitri dan terkejut apabila mendapati sekumpulan wanita dan pondan berpakaian menjolok mata berlegar di tempat letak kereta di situ, katanya.

Seorang peniaga makanan di situ, Ismail Hanafi, 35, berkata, sebelum ini bilangan pelacur dan pondan yang mencari makan di situ tidak ramai, tetapi sejak Ramadan ini jumlahnya meningkat dipercayai berikutan kehadiran ramai pengunjung di bazar lewat pagi di situ.

Sementara itu, Pengarah Jabatan Agama Islam Kedah (JAIK), Datuk Khairudin Zin ketika dihubungi berkata, pihaknya ada menerima maklumat mengenai gejala yang menjijikkan itu dan akan mengadakan operasi membanteras kegiatan tidak bermoral itu.

Celcom Axiata Terbit Sukuk RM4.2 bilion

CELCOM Axiata Bhd (Celcom) menerbitkan sukuk bernilai RM4.2 bilion kepada Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja (KWSP), CIMB Islamic Bank Bhd dan Malayan Banking Bhd dalam usahanya mengumpul modal untuk memperkukuh serta membentuk sinergi dalam operasinya.

Peneraju pengendali perkhidmatan mudah alih itu dalam kenyataannya berkata, sukuk yang belum diberikan penarafan itu diterbitkan sebagai sebahagian daripada proses dalaman untuk menyelaraskan fungsi perniagaan dan mewujudkan entiti berpusatkan rangkaian.

Ketua Eksekutif Celcom dan Pengarah Celcom Transmission (M) Sdn Bhd (CTX), Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly, berkata syarikat itu akan terus mencari peluang untuk meningkatkan kos dan kecekapan operasi.

Langkah dalaman ini adalah sebahagian inisiatif meluas kumpulan Axiata untuk peringkat akhir transformasi operasi serantau untuk memacu kecekapan, meningkatkan penjimatan kos serta mewujudkan nilai.

Selain mempunyai strategi jualan dan pemasaran yang berbeza, kami juga perlu fokus dan inovatif dalam keupayaan rangkaian kami bagi memacu prestasi kewangan, katanya.

Daripada nilai sukuk yang diterbitkan itu, KWSP akan melanggan RM3.4 bilion sementara RM800 juta akan dilanggan secara saksama oleh CIMB Investment dan Maybank Investment.

Terbitan sukuk dengan tempoh matang lima tahun hingga 10 tahun itu, akan diterbitkan oleh CTX, anak syarikat milik penuh Celcom.

Susulan itu, perniagaan rangkaian telekomunikasi Celcom akan dipindahkan kepada CTX.

Pengarah Pemasarannya, Zalman Aefendy Zainal Abidin, berkata Pelan BBM disasarkan khusus untuk pelanggan prabayar Xpax, yang majoritinya golongan muda, berkomunikasi dengan komuniti BlackBerry dari semua rangkaian telekomunikasi tanpa mengehadkan akses.

“Dengan hanya membayar 50 sen sehari, pelanggan Xpax yang sudah memiliki telefon BlackBerry tetapi belum lagi mendapatkan perkhidmatannya kini boleh bersosial dengan komuniti laman sembang BlackBerry dari semua rangkaian.

TM Sets Target For Unifi

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) is targeting 60,000 high speed broadband service (Unifi) subscribers by year end.

According to OSK Research Sdn Bhd (OSK Research), the target reflected the maiden guidance from management and implied a monthly addition of about 7,000 to 9,000 subscribers per month or 1,600 to 2,200 subscribers per week in the second half of this year. This compared with the research house’s forecast of 20,000 subscribers by end-2010 and the current Streamyx gross additions of about 5,000 to 7,000 subscribers per week.

The research house considered the target to be somewhat stretched as Unifi’s addressable market comprised existing Streamyx users, who were paying RM70 to RM90 per month on average, the fact that Unifi was positioned as a niche product and the potential inbound competition from Maxis Bhd (Maxis). It would suggest that management was eyeing a bigger proportion of subscribers upgrading from their current Streamyx plans.

In OSK Research’s June 29 report on TM, it said that the take-up on Unifi might have been diluted by the current ‘Super Upgrade’ promotion, which was a retention programme devised by TM to compel existing subscribers to up-grade to higher tier plans and the ‘Blockbuster’ promotion, which was a bundled package offering fixed line and broadband.

The research house stated that Maxis had revealed its intention to roll out high speed broadband and IPTV to homes by the third quarter of this year (3Q2010), which in its opinion could pose a longer term threat to TM if it could potentially bundle mobile services and content from sister company, Astro All Asia Networks plc (Astro), effectively providing a quadruple play value proposition to subscribers.

OSK Research revealed that Maxis had immediate access to 12 million mobile subscribers and three million pay-TV (Astro) subscribers to up-sell its services compared with TM’s 1.3 million premises targeted by Unifi under Phase 1 by end-2012. It noted that Maxis was currently in discussions with TM on lease of wholesale access from Unifi and previously said it could roll out its service to 65,000 premises by end 3Q2010.

The research house was maintaining its projection on Unifi at this juncture and saw revenue from the new service contributing a small 0.8 per cent to two per cent of TM’s group revenue over the next two financial years (FYs). The key risk to its forecast was the higher than anticipated take-up in the following months.

Thus, OSK Research has pegged TM’s target price at RM3.28 per share.

Deliver Fixed High Speed Broadband

Maxis Bhd (Maxis) has revealed its intention to deliver fixed high speed broadband services to homes and Internet Protocol television (IPTV) as early as the third quarter of 2010 (3Q10).

OSK Research Sdn Bhd (OSK Research) understood it was currently finalising commercial terms on the UniFi wholesale access with Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) and expected to roll out the service to 65,000 homes by end-2010. It expected Maxis to eventually offer quad play services to subscribers as it transforms into a fully integrated and converged outfit leveraging on the rich content from its sister company, Astro.

The research house added that over the longer term, a potential Maxis-Astro tie-up could become a formidable competitor to TM, as it would have access to 12 million mobile subscribers and three million pay-TV subscribers to upsell its services. Maxis possesses a strong brand name, good marketing track record and access to unparalleled content.

OSK Research pointed out that despite having RM3.9 billion in cash and strong operational cash flow exceeded RM3 billion per annum from its cash cow fixed line business, there remained little clarity with regard to TM’s intention to return surplus cash. While TM should have no problem meeting its guidance for the financial year 2010 (FY10), it saw TM entering into a cash deficit position by the financial year 2011 (FY11) as UniFi capital expenditure (capex) spending peaked. It noted that a US$260 million bond to be repaid by end-2010 should rule out the payment of a special dividend in the medium term.

According to TM, the cumulative take-up of TM’s high speed broadband service, UniFi had exceeded 3,500 households at end-June. This represented an average take-up of 300 per week since the service was launched, significantly below the average 5,000 to 7,000 per week on its regular Streamyx product.

OSK Research had raised its revenue forecast for TM by 0.8 to 3.8 per cent for FY10 and FY11 to factor in maiden contribution from UniFi.

Its assumptions now reflected a take-up of 20,000 in FY10 of the 750,000 premises targeted to be passed by end-2010 and 100,000 for FY11 and average revenue per user (ARPU) of RM150 per month.

The research house said that TM had tripled its UniFi installation teams over the past two months to serve new areas and to meet rising demand. Despite the fresh revenue contribution, the impact on TM’s earnings from UniFi was likely to be insignificant over the next two to three years due to the high operating expenditure (opex) involved and incremental depreciation expense from the new network.

DiGi To Extend Nationwide 3G Coverage

DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd will be extending its 3G (third-generation) cellular coverage to 50% nationwide by year end, from the current 30%.

It will invest about RM700mil in capital expenditure (capex) this year, with the bulk of that investment earmarked for the expansion of its 3G/mobile Internet coverage.

Henrik Clausen, chief executive officer of DiGi, said that with the improvements in its network, DiGi will extend its 3G coverage in Johor Baru.

"At the same time we plan to improve coverage in our other key areas, such as the Klang Valley, Penang, Ipoh, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu," he said.

On another matter, Clausen said DiGi would continuously strengthen its foothold in the postpaid cellular service market by leveraging on the increasing adoption of smartphones by Malaysians.

DiGi will continue to encourage social media and mobile broadband adoption among Malaysians by offering useful applications, attractive pricing and good user experiences.

As of the first quarter of this year, DiGi has 1.27 million postpaid service subscribers and 6.68 million prepaid customers.

P1 Completes Word's First 2.3Ghz

P1 W1MAX is now available to 3,500 homes in the under-served areas in Peninsular Malaysia with nine Community Broadband Centers launched to aid the community in broadband and Internet education.

Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (“P1”) in its mission to provide broadband for all; completed the world’s first 2.3GHz WiMAX Community Broadband Centres (CBCs) a week ahead of schedule.

“P1 lives and breathes our mission of ‘Broadband for All’. With the strong support from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in this public-private sector partnership, we’re able to speedily deploy what we believe is the world’s first 2.3GHz WiMAX CBCs in Malaysia,” said Michael Lai, Chief Executive Officer. He added that this noble endeavour is very much in line with the national goal of reaching 50% national household broadband penetration by the end of 2010. Malaysia’s household broadband penetration is currently at 33%.

This maiden project by P1 called for the provision of WiMAX broadband services to some 3,500 homes and over 21,000 settlers in the Federal Land Development Authority or FELDA settlement areas under the Universal Service Provision Fund. The nine CBCs that now have P1 W1MAX broadband are in the under-served areas in the states of Perak and Kedah in Sungai Behrang, four different points on Gunung Besout, Trolak Utara, Sungai Klah, and Ijok in Perak as well as one zone on Gunung Bongsu in Kedah.

P1 was commissioned to the project on 30 November 2009 to provide WiMAX broadband access for at least 5 years. The company began its deployment at the beginning of 2010 and established all nine CBCs on 16 March. The CBCs were then inspected and fully approved for operations by MCMC in late March 2010.

“We congratulate P1 on its commitment to not only meet the project deadline, but to actually beat it by a week,” said Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Khalid Ramli, Chairman of MCMC.

“The NBI is a comprehensive strategy in which BBGP is one of its components in terms of broadband demand catering to semi-urban and rural as well as remote areas. The Broadband to General Population (BBGP) has in the past since 2001, been implemented through fixed line technology.”

“Time and again, studies have proven that the increase in broadband penetration has a positive effect on the economic growth of a state and a country as a whole. When considering a suitable broadband solution for these unconnected parts of Kedah and Perak, under the new NBI, BBGP was expanded and innovated upon through new wireless technology like 3G/HSPA and WiMAX which are effective in delivering broadband access to more areas faster, especially in remote and underserved areas within geographically diverse locations. By the end of this year, under the BBGP, 25 districts will be covered with WiMAX facilities.”

Lai informed that the fully completed CBCs are receiving overwhelming response from the community since its completion. The centres are frequented by a daily average of 50 visitors. A large number of the visitors are students who visit the centre to conduct online research for their school projects, homework and networking with friends. The services offered at the CBCs include P1 W1MAX broadband access, basic ICT-related skills training, printing as well as scanning services.

Lai further explained that WiMAX excels in first-time user acceptance, as it is a fully plug and play service, has no need for phone lines, is affordable and offers superior user experience in these areas.

“P1’s service deployment there indicates there is demand for broadband. We believe the availability of 4G P1 W1MAX in these settlements will contribute positively to the development and progress of the local industries especially eco-tourism, industrial agriculture and cottage industries,” Lai noted.

“Bridging the digital divide is not only about rolling out the connectivity to the rural areas. It is also about making the Internet connectivity relevant, useful and easy to use for the people who have previously not been exposed to the wonders of cyberspace,” he concluded.

WASHINGTON: Facebook said it has teamed up with mobile operators in nearly 50 countries to offer a fast and free version of the popular social networking site on handphones.

“We’ve put all the graphics, the photos, the videos one click away so the site is text only and the pages are super light, super fast to load,” said Henri Moissinac, head of mobile business for Facebook.

The new mobile site, 0.facebook.com, is “optimised for speed and it’s free,” Moissinac told AFP.

He said it was designed to get around the “biggest barriers to the mobile Internet — the speed of the experience and the potential cost of browsing.”

It will be available from 56 mobile operators in 47 countries.

“The total subscriber base of all of these operators is about 500 million users,” Moissinac said. “So potentially you have 500 million mobile subscribers who could access Facebook mobile for free on their phone.”

He said there were currently over 100 million active users of Facebook’s present mobile site, m.facebook.com and the new site would allow the Palo Alto, California-based social network to expand its reach on the devices.

“Our goal in mobile is to serve every user on every phone in every language on every network,” he said.

Users of 0.facebook.com can update their status, see their News Feed, comment on posts and send and reply to messages like on Facebook.com.

They will be charged, however, if they want to see photos or videos.

“They have a link that says click here to see the photos,” Moissinac said. “When they click to see the photos there’ll be a disclaimer that says ‘Just so you know you’re going to be paying data charges for these photos.’”

He said 0.facebook.com was designed to be a “permanent service.” “All of the operators are committed to making 0.facebook.com free for more than 12 months,” Moissinac said.

When contacted, a DiGi spokesman said that the company is in the middle of testing of the service but declined to reveal a launch date. Representatives from Maxis and Celcom could not be reached at press time. — AFP/Relaxnews

Maxis customers will soon be able to perform payments via online and mobile using PayPal. The two innovation giants today announced their plans for a strategic collaboration that will enable Maxis customers to easily and safely shop online, on their mobile devices, and on their television sets in the near future.

“Sifat tidak ingin belajar atau fobia terhadap teknologi baru perlu dielakkan agar tidak ketinggalan dalam kemajuan dan pembangunan ma-syarakat di peringkat negara mahupun peringkat global,” ujarnya.

Beliau berkata demikian ketika menghadiri majlis makan malam sempena dengan Hari Ibu anjuran Pergerakan Wanita Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Pujut, malam kelmarin.

Andy berkata, pencapaian dan kejayaan wanita dalam pelbagai bidang di Malaysia setanding dengan negara membangun yang lain.

“Pencapaian wanita amat membanggakan bahkan dalam bidang-bidang yang tertentu mereka (wanita) lebih berjaya berbanding lelaki,” katanya.

Katanya, wanita di negara ini berjaya mendapat tempat di pusat-pusat pengajian tinggi, baik dalam mahupun luar negara dengan mendapat kejayaan cemerlang.

“Ekoran kejayaan yang memberangsangkan itu, kita dapati berlaku peningkatan jumlah wanita dalam sektor awam, swasta dan juga bidang perniagaan,” jelasnya.

Andy memberitahu, kejayaan yang dinikmati wanita merupakan hasil kesungguhan, iltizam dan keinginan wanita untuk mengecapi taraf dan cara hidup yang lebih baik, progresif dan berdaya saing.

“Kita berasa lebih bangga kerana kejayaan negara ini turut disumbangkan oleh kebolehan, kesungguhan dan potensi kaum wanita dalam pelbagai bidang seperti ekonomi, sosial dan politik selepas kemerdekaan yang dicorak oleh kaum ini,” katanya.

Beliau menjelaskan, dari segi politik, wanita bukan sahaja menjadi ahli biasa bahkan begitu aktif dan ada yang memegang jawatan penting dalam parti dan pentadbiran kerajaan.

KUCHING: It was a glorious moment for Michelle Oslen Joshua Jimbai when she won the ‘1Dayak Traditional Costume Beauty Pageant’ held at Telang Usan Hotel last Friday night.

The Iban lass wowed judges with her poise and grace, outdoing the other 14 contestants.

The coveted title came with a RM1,000 cash prize, trophy, sash and hamper.

First runner-up Cressida Chambers Ramlee received RM700 in cash prize, trophy, sash and hamper. The Bidayuh maiden was also voted Miss Favourite, one of eight subsidiary titles in the pageant.

Natasha Charmaine Rickson also made a double win as the pageant’s second runner-up winner as well as clinching the Miss Photogenic title. She came away with RM500 in cash prize, trophy, sash and hamper.

The remaining subsidiary titles were won by Dolly Charles Saches (Miss Hospitality), Sharmini Mary Inon (Miss Charming), Hellen Molinie (Miss Outgoing), Elsie Joannes (Miss Creative), Caroline Dewort (Miss Talent) and Frisca Freddy (Miss Intelligent).

Tindakan Tegas Kepada Penjaja

Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU) tidak akan berkompromi dengan penjaja Pasar Minggu Satok yang didapati masih gagal mematuhi syarat lesen yang ditetapkan pihak berkenaan.

Inspektor Kesihatan Kanan Unit Pelesenan DBKU, Chong Ted Min berkata, penjaja berkenaan yang didapati melanggar syarat-syarat itu juga berdepan dengan tindakan pembatalan lesen selepas notis diberikan.

Menurutnya, pada tahun lepas sahaja sebanyak 60 lesen penjaja telah dibatalkan kerana melanggar syarat-syarat lesen termasuk gagal membayar lesen atau tidak hadir berniaga.

"Setakat April tahun ini, sebanyak 71 lesen penjaja dibatalkan akibat pelbagai kesalahan yang melanggar syarat-syarat lesen.

"Justeru orang ramai yang berminat menjalankan perniagaan atau jualan adalah dikehendaki untuk memohon lesen yang sah sebelum sebarang urusan dilaksanakan," katanya di sini hari ini.

Beliau berkata demikian kepada pemberita selepas mengetuai lawatan kerja di Pasar Minggu Satok di sini yang turut dihadiri Inspektor Penguatkuasa Unit Pengurusan Akaun Pelesen DBKU, Lim Sin Kiat.

Ted Min memberitahu, DBKU juga telah mengeluarkan 519 notis bertulis kepada penjaja yang melanggar syarat lesen pada tahun lepas manakala 327 notis dikeluarkan sehingga April tahun ini.

Katanya, setakat ini seramai 1,461 penjaja berdaftar berniaga di Pasar Minggu Satok yang terdiri daripada pelbagai bangsa.

"Anggota penguat kuasa kita akan terus membuat pemantauan dari semasa ke semasa bagi memastikan para penjaja mematuhi syarat-syarat lesen yang dikuatkuasakan," tegasnya. - Utusan

DiGi Q1 results

DiGi.Com Bhd’s net profit for its first quarter ended March 31, 2010 increased to RM278.26mil from RM275.44mil due to encouraging subscriber acquisitions coupled with higher usage of mobile services.

Revenue for the period increased to RM1.29bil from RM1.22bil previously.

In a note to Bursa Malaysia yesterday, DiGi said its subscriber base now stood at 7.9 million customers (versus 7.2 million in 2009).

“However, average revenue per user was lower at RM53 compared to the RM56 recorded in same quarter last year, mainly as a result of lower end-user prices,” it said.

The company also declared a first interim dividend payout of 35 sen per ordinary share of 10 sen each, payable on June 18.

On its prospects for 2010, DiGi said the improving economic environment together with its pursuit of business growth in key markets, including the fast growing mobile Internet market, would enable the company to sustain a positive growth trajectory for the year.

“The mobile Internet market in Malaysia is expected to grow significantly, based on a strong demand for quality Internet access together with more smart devices, such as the iPhone.”

DiGi said it currently had more than 1.5 million cumulative mobile Internet customers.

The programmes, targeting senior and top management level, will be part of the KLEC’s initiative to promote world-class executive and continuing professional education programmes within the region.

The Ministry of Information Communication and Culture has instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to investigate and take action against the individual who created the website of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said the government took a serious view on the creation of the website as it tarnished the image of the King.

He said that shortly after detecting the website, which was made to look like it was the official website of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, he had instructed the MCMC to carry out an investigation to track down the creator.

“The act truly ignored the Malaysian civilisation besides showing disrespect for the country’s royal institution.

“Stern action must be taken for this irresponsible act,” he told reporters after the post-cabinet meeting at the Angkasapuri, here yesterday.

Reminding the people that the government would not tolerate such an evil act, Rais said Malaysia had the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988 which could be used against the individual who created the website.

He said the MCMC now had a special prosecutor from the Attorney-General’s Chambers to prosecute offenders breaching the cyber law. — Bernama

DiGi iPhone

DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (DiGi) will start the sale of the iPhone at selected outlets from April 3 under its new plan.OSK Research Sdn Bhd (OSK Research) said in its research report that the key selling features of the new plan were the low entry cost, inclusive deals via extended 36 months contract, handset subsidies, and higher data limit, off-net short message service and multimedia messaging service bundles.

DiGi’s entry level iPhone plan (iDiGi88) comes with a monthly access of RM88 which is lower than Maxis’ RM100 (IV1 plan). It also offers two other plans priced at RM138 and RM238 which would compete with Maxis’ RM155 and RM225 packages.

It was reported that given the attractive price-points, DiGi’s current subscribers would be compelled to upgrade or re-contract. The plans would also appeal to subscribers of Maxis and Celcom, especially those at the tail end of their contractual obligations.

Furthermore, DiGi was making the iPhone more affordable by lengthening the lock-in period to 36 months versus the maximum 24 months for Maxis.

An ‘all-in-one’ monthly package that included a handset allowed the cost of the handset to be defrayed over an additional 12 months via an easy payment scheme with zero per cent interest.

The research house was of the opinion that the monthly commitment was four to nine per cent lower for DiGi that subsidizes the older 3G 8GB model for its top tier plan.

It was also reported that the handset subsidies offered by both DiGi and Maxis were in par at 33 to 64 per cent for packages on the 24-month contract. However, DiGi would take longer to recoup the subsidies given its lower monthly commitment charge.

Moreover, DiGi was offering higher data download of 1GB to 5GB versus the 500MB to 3GB of Maxis. It was also offering higher monthly short message service and multimedia messaging service bundles that were applicable off-net.

The research house was positive on the launch of iPhone for DiGi in the long-term since iPhone would help DiGi shore up data revenue contribution over the longer term from the current 20 per cent. Internet revenue was targeted to contribute 15-20 per cent of revenue for three to four years. However, it was viewed that the launch would exert pressure on DiGi’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margins and earnings in the medium term.

Due to the fact that DiGi had customized its iPhone packages in order to cater for a larger addressable market, the research house expected the plans to be attractive enough to entice existing 2G and 3G subscribers to upgrade or re-contract their plans.

The research house maintained a neutral recommendation on the stock of DiGi with a target price of RM23.10. The key share price re-rating catalysts going forward were capital management and better than expected results. - BP

Axiata To Announce Possible Early Dividend

KUCHING: At the recent Invest Malaysia conference, Axiata Group Bhd (Axiata) chief executive officer (CEO), Datuk Jamaludin Ibrahim said that the proceeds from the placement of PT XL Axiata Tbk (XL) shares might be used to pay a special dividend.OSK Research Sdn Bhd (OSK Research) in its research report stated that the likelihood of a special dividend materialising sooner than expected as an added re-rating catalyst for the stock given that the market had only priced in a maiden dividend next year.

The research house added that management had previously indicated a definitive guidance would only be provided in the second half of this year.

Based on the proceeds from XL’s share placement of RM1.83 billion and assuming that Axiata returned half of this amount, shareholders stood to receive cash distribution of 11 sen per share implying a net payout of 20 per cent based on its forecasted earnings for this year and a dividend yield of three per cent.

The research firm estimated Axiata’s net gearing would improve marginally to 0.5 times from 0.55 times while its net debt over earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) would ease to 1.8 times from two times with the remaining funds used to pare down debts.

Meanwhile, the group CEO also expected the growth of XL and Celcom Malaysia Bhd (Celcom) to surpass that of the industry this year, which was consistent with the research house’s projected revenue growth of 15 per cent and 10 per cent respectively.

Furthermore, the research firm projected that XL and Celcom were projected to contribute some 85 per cent and 83 per cent of group revenue and EBITDA respectively this year and account for 86 per cent of its sum-of-parts (SOP).

OSK Research cut its financial year 2010 and 2011 forecasts by between four per cent and 11 per cent to reflect the higher minority interest (MI) leakage from the reduced stake in XL net of interest savings.

Its previous SOP target had also been adjusted accordingly to factor in the proceeds from the share sale. All in, its revised SOP target price for Axiata was nudged up marginally to RM4.26 per share from RM4.24 per share. - BP

Tune Hotels.com's UK Venture Crucial For Global Expansion

Tune Hotels.com’s plan for 15 hotels in Greater London in the UK by 2017 sets a very positive tone for its global expansion, says Group CEO Mark Lankester.

“The UK and London in particular is a crucial part of our expansion plan, on top of our organic growth in Asia. From London, we already set our eyes on Europe, the Middle East and America. DiGi Need More Spectrum

Of the four mobile players in the country, DiGi.Com Bhd seems to have the least bandwidth, hence the company feels it should get more of the GSM 900 megahertz (MHz) spectrum so that it can reach out to a wider segment of the population.

“We have a little bit of the 900MHz spectrum and we need more. The beauty of the 900MHz spectrum is that it is easier to have nationwide coverage with it, while with the 1,800MHz we can easily provide services in the city centre and that is why we need more of the 900MHz spectrum,’’ said DiGi chairman Sigve Brekke.

The company is also one of four mobile players with a 1,800MHz, or 3G spectrum, which it got through a share-swap exercise with Time dotCom Bhd after failing to secure a spectrum directly from the Government.

DiGi has only 4MHz of the 900MHz spectrum band while its rivals, Celcom Axiata Bhd and Maxis Communications Bhd, have 34MHz and 32MHz respectively.

Celcom and Maxis got more spectrum as they had acquired other celcos.

The 900MHz is used by operators to offer 2G services while the 1,800MHz is for 3G-based services.

In a perfect world, all operators should have the same spectrum so that they can use the spectrum in the optimal way,’’ Brekke told StarBiz in an interview.

Spectrum is vital in the telecoms sector, without which operators will not be able to offer services to users.

Whether DiGi will get its wish is not known but telecommunications players are in constant dialogue with regulators over spectrum issues.

The Government has awarded various spectra to many companies, and some of these companies have maximised the use of their spectrum but others have not.

Experts believe that it is timely for the Government to “re-farm out” some of the under-utilised spectra.

Market research company IDC Asia/Pacific’s telecom research director Bill Rojas believes that the re-farming out of spectra in Malaysia is much needed.

Both Brekke and Maybank Investment Bank Bhd senior analyst Khair Mirza echo Rojas’ sentiments on the re-farming out of spectra as the move would benefit a larger population.

If one operator can put 7.7 million users on 4Mhz of spectrum, then there is a case for it to be allocated more spectrum so that the whole country can benefit from greater penetration of mobile services,’’ Khair said.

Brekke reckons that “the spectrum situation cannot be fixed, it (should be debated and) done in comparison with technology developments.’’

There were 30.3 million subscribers in the country as at the end of last year, of whom Maxis had 12 million users, Celcom 10.1 million, DiGi 7.7 million. The remaining users are on U Mobile Sdn Bhd and MVNO (mobile virtual network operators) networks.

Brekke is also head of Asian region and executive vice president for the Norwegian investor, Telenor Group.

Telenor has 49% stake in DiGi and has been an investor since 1999.

Apart from its investments in Malaysia, Telenor also has a 67% stake in Thailand’s second largest player, DTAC; 56.8% in Bangladesh’s largest mobile player, Grameenphone; and 100% in Telenor Pakistan. Last year, Telenor bought a 67.35% stake in India’s Uninor.

DiGi’s fortunes are set to change now that it has won the rights to begin selling iPhones in the country by mid-year for a three-year period.

It is the second operator in the country to do so after Maxis, which began selling the phones a year ago.

It is said that 91,000 iPhones had been sold in the country since March last year. “The iPhone is a nice interface to the Internet. If you really want Internet, you need the network, content and (right) handset. Smartphones are going to be important (as they are) Internet user-friendly,’’ Brekke said.

He shares DiGi CEO Johan Dennelind’s sentiment that the iPhone will help DiGi increase sales by more than 5% this year compared with a 2% sales growth last year.

We are excited about its (iPhone’s) prospects and we need to be in the market with that offering. But the challenge is for us to come up with data packages with the right pricing model.

We also do not want to cannibalise our voice business but we need to get back our investment for our commitment. It would be affordable packages,’’ he said.

DiGi has embarked on a cost-restructuring exercise and “in a market like Malaysia where mobile penetration rates are high (at 106.2% as at the end of last year), we have to look at (how we can be more) cost effective but not at the expense of customers,’’ according to Brekke. - The Star

Axiata Planned To Place Out 20%

Axiata Group Bhd said it planned to place out 20% of its Indonesian unit, PT XL Axiata Tbk, to increase the latter’s free float. Axiata, which currently owns a 86.5% stake in XL, could receive more than RM2.2bil in proceeds from the offering, based on the current market price of XL. The price of the placement will be determined via a book-building exercise.

Axiata said it was evaluating the options of how it would use the proceeds. The proceeds could be used to pare down Axiata’s debt or as dividends to shareholders, or a combination of both.

Axiata has a net debt of more than RM10bil but it has sufficient cashflows to support that debt level after turning in excellent results last year. Its 2009 net profit tripled to RM1.66bil and it turned free cashflow positive in that year.

PETALING JAYA, 25 February 2010 – Tune Talk, the country’s newest mobile service provider will be heating up the 15th Edition of Asia’s premier cycling event, Le Tour de Langkawi (LTDL) 2010 by participating in the Tour’s cavalcade procession from 26 February – 7 March.

Tune Talk’s striking red and white car will be part of LTDL’s cavalcade procession that starts with a pre-event tour starting off at the LTDL Headquarters in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur heading for Kuantan on Friday 26 February. While stopping overnight in Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu, various fun-filled activities including artiste performances, games and lucky draws will be held at the Berjaya Mega Mall, Kuantan and Dataran Batu Burok, Kuala Terengganu.

Upon official flagging off of the LTDL race in Kota Bharu on Monday 1 March, the cavalcade together with participating cyclists will go through seven states of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor and two Federal Territories – Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur covering a total distance of 1,013.9 km.

A total of 120 cyclists from 20 teams including 2 local teams will compete in the race, comprising 7 stages which are Kota Bharu - Kuala Berang covering 174.5km, followed by Kuala Terengganu - Chukai (182.3km), Pekan - Mersing (145.6km), Mersing - Parit Sulong (163.5km), Muar - Port Dickson (111.5km), Putrajaya - Genting Highlands (102.8km) and Kuala Kubu Baru - Dataran Merdeka (133.7km).

The convoy will make stops at designated points along the routes where spectators and local residents can grab interesting Tune Talk gifts. Maxis Posts RM503m Q4 Profit

Maxis Bhd registered a net profit of RM503mil on revenue of RM2.2bil for the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, supported by an increase in total mobile subscriptions, postpaid average revenue per user (Arpu) and non-voice revenue.

In a statement, chief executive officer Sandip Das said mobile subscriptions increased 5% from the third quarter, bringing the total to 12.3 million, driven by prepaid and wireless broadband users.

Versus the preceding quarter, its arpu for postpaid grew 4% to RM107 while prepaid Arpu slipped RM1 to RM40. Non-voice revenue rose 8% to RM714mil due to an increase in SMS and advanced data services.

Maxis declared an interim dividend of six sen and proposed a final dividend of three sen. The payout will amount to RM675mil in addition to the RM450mil paid in the third quarter, bringing total dividends for the financial year ended Dec 31 (FY09) to RM1.125bil.

According to its filing with Bursa Malaysia, the fourth quarter and year-ended Dec 31 results reflected the performance of the Maxis Group since Oct 1, 2009, the date of completion of a business combination exercise as a prelude to Maxis’ listing in November.

Tune Talk Aims For More

Mobile virtual network operator Tune Talk is confident it will be able to surpass the one million-subscriber mark within the its first year of operation.

Tune Talk was launched six months ago and it recently announced that it now has over 600,000 subscribers.

“We aim to achieve our target by boosting our distribution channels, adding more service features as well as more exciting promotions and deals,” said Tune Talk chief executive officer Jason Lo.

To support the company’s expansion, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) has granted it a new numbering block consisting of 500,000 numbers with number series 010-770 0000 to 010-819 9999. Tune Talk’s earlier numbers ranged from 010-500 0000 up to 010-549 9999.

To encourage more take-up of its services, the company has added other facilities such as GPRS data services as well as international roaming covering over all South-East Asian countries, China, Australia and Britain.

“And there will be more cool things coming in the next few months such as MMS content, caller ringback tones, events and others,” Lo said. Tune Talk’s commercial service was launched last August 19 and it operates on Celcom’s 2.5G network.

Users pay a 22sen per minute flat rate for voice calls and 5 sen per SMS to all numbers nationwide.

With IDD rates that are around 10% to 30% cheaper than other operators, Tune Talk is also popular amongst migrant workers and parents of students studying abroad, Lo claimed.

It is also the only mobile service provider that rewards its subscribers with free personal accident insurance coverage worth RM100,000, Lo added. - TheStar

Celcom Big Investment In Sabah, Sarawak

Cellular telephone service provider Celcom Axiata Berhad is planning to spend much of a RM1bil investment on improving the company’s services in Sabah and Sarawak.

Celcom Axiata senior vice-president (enterprise services) Farid Yunus said the investment would expand voice services and 3G broadband coverage in the two states.

Farid said, in Sabah alone, Celcom Axiata was increasing the number of base stations by 100 this year.

“As a government-linked company, we have big responsibilities and intend to fulfil them,” he said at the launch of Celcom Axiata’s Blacberry Bold 9700 by State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun recently.

Masidi said the occasional congestion of Celcom Axiata lines in Sabah reflected the extent of use of the company’s services in the state.

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is now available at all Celcom branches in Sabah.

Needs And Interests Of Youths

Ministry of Social Development and Urbanisation (KPSU) has come up with a programme that will involve the participation of youths on what they need and want.

Called ‘Belia Survey 2010’, it is a comprehensive survey aimed to encourage youths between the age of 15 and 40 years, to express their thoughts and ideas.

The programme is a pioneering effort to effectively identify the needs of youths and their interests, while compiling a social data to improve the development of youth programmes in the future.

Belia Survey 2010 was launched yesterday at Lim Kok Wing Institute of Creative Technology campus at Jalan Nanas by Assistant Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation (Youth Affairs and Training) Larry Sng.

LimKokWing Institute of Creative Technology, Celcom and MRS Management are among the partners for the programme.

Sng said the survey would cover all the major towns of the State, including in rural areas and would take about three months to complete.

Sng said about one million or 42 per cent of the state population are aged between 15 and 40 years.

He thanked the partners in the programme, which he said was a good indication of the private sectors participation towards moulding the younger generation.

Meanwhile, LimKokWing students were involved in the design of the logo for the programme.

At the ceremony, Sng also launched LimKokWing ‘Anugerah Kuching Kreatif’ (Kuching Creative Awards) to garner creative ideas brought forth by young Sarawakians.

The ‘Anugerah Kuching Kreatif’ is an open competition whereby participants can submit their works online to participate in two categories- open and students categories.

Maxis Targets More Commercial Buildings

Maxis Bhd has targeted between 100 to 150 new commercial buildings for its telecommunication services this year, vice president and head of enterprise and carrier business, Fitri Abdullah, said yesterday.The company was looking at buildings mainly in the Klang Valley, Penang and Johor Baharu, he said.

Maxis has to date connected 340 buildings after having provided its services to over 100 new buildings last year.

“We have also done smart partnerships with developers. End of last year, we signed an agreement with Cyberjaya to provide end-to-end solutions,” Fitri told reporters after the signing of strategic collaborative agreement between Maxis and Macro Lynx Sdn Bhd here.

“We will continue to enrich our customers’ experience by investing in better quality coverage across more buildings nationwide. This year, we will extend our reach beyond the Klang Valley to Penang and Johor Baharu,” he said.

Maxis had put in place direct fibre access into an additional 31 per cent of the buildings in the Klang Valley last year, he said.

Under yesterday’s agreement, Maxis and Macro Lynx will provide information and communications technology (ICT) services to Malaysia’s first Grade A++ commercial complex, the GTower, located in the Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

Maxis and Macro Lynx will provide a full suite of end-to-end fixed solutions to tenants at the first internationally certified green building in Malaysia.

“Macro Lynx will be able to leverage on Maxis’ fixed fibre network which allows both parties to expand their service area and improve on services to customers and we have also provided comprehensive coverage,” Fitri said.

Telekom Malaysia(TM) mensasarkan untuk menyumbang lebih 20 peratus kadar penembusan jalur lebar di Sarawak menjelang hujung tahun ini.Pengurus Besar TM Sarawak Omar Zaki Mustafa berkata, TM sebagai sebuah syarikat telekomunikasi akan memainkan peranan untuk mencapai sasaran selari dengan saranan kerajaan, iaitu 50 peratus kadar penembusan jalur lebar seluruh negara menjelang hujung tahun 2010.

“Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia (SKMM) mensasarkan 50 peratus penembusan jalur lebar menjelang penghujung tahun ini dan sasaran berkenaan bukan untuk TM sahaja, bahkan juga semua pengusaha termasuk P1, Redtone, Digi dan Maxis,” katanya kepada pemberita selepas menghadiri seminar Premium Perusahaan Kecil dan Sederhana (SME) Biz Net 2010 TM.

Sarawak pada masa kini mencapai 17 peratus setiap isi rumah dan beliau percaya ia dapat mencapai lebih 20 peratus menjelang hujung tahun 2010 dengan pakej istimewa yang akan diperkenalkan.

TM memeperkenalkan empat produk baru mereka, iaitu ‘Internet Virtual Private Network (IPVPN), TM Direct Services, VSAT dan Business Broadband.

DiGi Targeting Small And Medium Enterprises

DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (DiGi) aims to grow its mobile Internet services, Turbo Third Generation (3G) network in Sarawak by targeting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as well as entrepreneurs as part as its smart business solution plan.

Its Sarawak regional head, Benny Wee, pointed out that as businesses currently require fast Internet connection to speed up business transactions, its Turbo 3G mobile Internet services offer the exact solution for them.

“We plan to offer SMEs and entrepreneurs in Sarawak with good Internet connectivity through our newly launched Turbo 3G network.

“This is part of the smart business solution plan that our company extends to the business community here.

Meanwhile, DiGi.com Bhd chief executive officer Johan Dennelind said Sarawak remained one of its key markets to grow its broadband services.

“Sarawak remains a stronghold market for us to grow our mobile Internet service business. With a big population size, there is indeed more room for growth.

“We affirm our long-term commitment to our present and potential customers in Sarawak that we will bring them better products and services in the future. “In the mean time, we plan to take it one step at a time,” he said.

In addition, he noted that DiGi will also be conducting more community projects by setting up more Community Broadband Centre (CBC) in the rural areas in Sarawak.

“This is part of DiGi’s initiatives to enable people, especially the younger generations in the rural areas, to enjoy Internet access.

“Presently, we have been given the licence to set up 13 CBC throughout the country.

“We do not rule out the possibility of setting up more CBC in the rural areas in the State as opportunities arise.

“This will definitely benefit the younger generations in the rural areas as technology brings innovation and innovation spurs the economy of the country which subsequently contributes to the growth of the country,” he explained.

Wee also agreed that there is a need to bring Internet services to the people in the rural areas as it will bring closer the digital gap between the rural and urban people.

On the allocation of funds for the CBC, Dennelind said DiGi has set aside RM3.55 million for the capital expenditure and operating expenses for each CBC, while the five-year project will also be co-funded by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

Further, Dennelind said DiGi would be aggressive in rolling out its mobile Internet service to its users here.

On DiGi’s prospects for 2010, he said he is confident that the company will register robust earnings.

As at the end of 2009, the company had 500,000 mobile broadband customers and the numbers is expected to go up this year due to the recovery of the country’s economy.

“We are optimistic about the outlook for 2010 as consumer sentiment has started to pick up towards the third quarter and fourth quarter of last year.

“As the economy recovers, people will start spending and presently Internet is one of the necessities especially for businesses,” he added.

When asked on the growth of its revenue for this year, he expects that the telecommunication company is on track to register 5 per cent growth.

He also revealed that the company would be spending between RM350 million to RM450 million in capital expenditure per year in the next few years to promote its products.

To recap, DiGi has just reported its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2009 last Wednesday (February 3, 2010).

The company’s net profit for financial year 2009 was RM1 billion against RM1.14 billion in financial year 2008.

Although revenue grew by 2 per cent to RM4.91 billion on the support of steady demand for mobile services from its 7.7 millionsubscri- ber base that had increased 8 per cent yearon- year.

He cited in a statement that 2009 was a year of transition for DiGi as it ventured into the provision of mobile Internet.

20 Perjanjian Di Sabah Dan 18 Di Sarawak

Kita sudah banyak mendengar mengenai persefahaman 20 Perkara apabila Sabah dan Sarawak ingin menubuhkan Malaysia bersama Malaya. Ketiga – tiga negara ini bersetuju kepada beberapa perjanjian, yang dikenali sebagai persefahaman 20 Perkara yang memberikan Sabah dan Sarawak pemerintahan sendiri. Persefahaman 20 Perkara ini adalah asas kepada “jalinan dan melindungi hak” penduduk Sabah dan Sarawak.

Tetapi, selepas 45 tahun, kerajaan Persekutuan bukan sahaja tidak memperdulikan perjanjian tersebut malah menukar “peraturan” tersebut tanpa kebenaran Sabah dan Sarawak. Kesannya, penduduk Sabah dan Sarawak berasa tidak puas hati kerana mereka merasa “dipencilkan” dan “diabaikan” serta “dipinggirkan” oleh Barisan Nasional (BN) yang diterajui UMNO.

Sabah dan Sarawak sudah dan terus berusaha dalam memainkan peranan kepada Malaysia tetapi tidak bagi Malaya dan hanya mereka yang tahu mengapa mereka tidak berpegang pada janji.

Beberapa perkara yang agak “panas” dalam “perjanjian” tersebut akan diberi perhatian dan komen akan menyusul berdasarkan pemerhatian terhadap keadaan semasa.

Perkara 1: Agama
Tiada bantahan terhadap Islam sebagai agama kebangsaan Malaysia tetapi Sarawak sepatutnya tidak mempunyai agama rasmi. Segala bidang kuasa Malaya yang berkaitan dengan Islam tidak patut dikuatkuasakan di Sarawak.
Kerajaan negeri Sarawak meneruskan program “peng-Islamkan” tanpa memperdulikan perasaan sensitif penganut Kristian dan agama lain.

Pendekatan “peng-Islaman” menyebabkan ramai beranggapan bahawa Islam adalah agama rasmi Sarawak. Ini menarik perhatian Bumiputra Bukan Muslim yang mendapati pendekatan yang lebih terhadap peranan Islam walaupun ia bukan agama kebangsaan negeri. Kita mendapati yang polisi Islam dibawa masuk ke dalam beberapa aktiviti dan perancangan di dalam negeri dalam

menegakkan Islam sebagai agama kebangsaan negeri seperti pembacaan doa Islam di dalam majlis rasmi negeri. Oleh sebab Islam bukan agama kebangsaan negeri, mengapa pula mereka yang memerintah mahukan Tuan Yang Terutama mesti di kalangan Muslim. Itu tidak seharusnya.

Perkara 2: Bahasa
a. Bahasa Malaysia adalah bahasa kebangsaan bagi Persekutuan
b. Bahasa Ingeeris boleh diteruskan dalam tempoh 10 tahun selepas Hari Malaysia
c. Bahasa Inggeris akan menjadi bahasa rasmi Sarawak untuk pelbagai tujuan negeri dan persekutuan tanpa had masa

Contohnya:
1) Pegawai kerajaan Persekutuan yang beroperasi di Sarawak menegaskan bahawa semua komunikasi mesti menggunakan Bahasa Malaysia.
2) Kementerian Pelajaran mahukan semua pelajar lulus dalam Bahasa Malaysia sebelum meneruskan pengajian ke peringkat yang lebih tinggi.

Semua arahan tersebut hanya boleh digunakan di Malaya, di Sarawak pula jabatan tersebut patur akur dengan persefahaman 20 Perkara. Usaha dalam mewujudkan jalinan nasional memang harus ada tetapi persefahaman tersebut harus juga dihormati.

Perkara 6: Imigresen
Kawalan imigresen terhadap sebarang tempat di Malaysia dari luar memang tugas Kerajaan Pusat. Tetapi kemasukan ke Sarawak perlu juga mendapat kebenaran dari kerajaan Negeri. Kerajaan Pusat tidak boleh diberi kuasa penuh mewakili kerajaan negeri untuk meluluskan kemasukan ke Sarawak kecuali atas bidang keselamatan. Sarawak harus mempunyai kuasa sepenuhnya selain dari pergerakkan penjawat awam Kerajaan Persekutuan dari tempat lain di Malaysia .

Perkara 11: Takrif dan Kewangan
Sarawak harus mengawal pentadbiran kewangan, pembangunan dan takrifnya sendiri serta hak dalam menentukan cukai dan pinjaman.

Perkara 12: Kedudukan Istimewa Penduduk Asli
Pada prinsipnya, penduduk asli Sarawak harus menikmati hak istimewa sejajar dengan hak yang dinikmati oleh Melayu di Malaya, tetapi perkara ini sering dilupakan oleh mereka. Ramai penduduk Semenanjung beranggapan yang Dayak adalah bukan Bumiputera. Isu ini kerap diungkit apabila Bumiputera Bukan Muslim membeli hartanah mengikut kuota bumiputera. Bank pun sama. Ternyata perkara yang diajar di sekolah mengenai hal ini tidak betul atau sengaja dicicirkan oleh sesetengah pihak.

Perkara 15: Pelajaran
Sistem pendidikan/pelajaran di Sarawak harus dikekalkan kerana ia adalah di bidang kuasa pentadbiran negeri. Segala peruntukan dikawal oleh kerajaan Persekutuan. Dalam Rancangan Malaysia ke 9 (RMK9) sejumlah RM9 billion diperuntukkan untuk menaik taraf dan membina sekolah baru. Bukan itu sahaja, kontrak membaik pulih dan pembinaan juga dikawal oleh kerajaan persekutuan. Malah mereka juga melantik Muslim untuk menjadi juga guru besar dan pengetua di sekolah mubaligh kristian. Ini tidak sepatutnya berlaku di Sarawak.

Perkara 17: Wakil di Parlimen
Bukan jumlah penduduk Sarawak yang seharusnya diambil kira, saiz dan potensinya juga jangan diberi perhatian. Sememangnya Sarawak memberi 30 Ahli Parlimen di bawah Barisan nasional (BN). Permintaan Sarawak untuk memberi kelebihan dalam pemilihan jawatan Menteri Kabinet tidak diendahkan oleh Perdana Menteri. Sebagai balasan, kerajaan Persekutuan memberi Sarawak RM1 billion untuk pembangunan yang diuruskan oleh Jabatan Perdana Menteri. RM1 billion ini adalah peruntukan adalah pertolongan atau satu bentuk “rasuah” untuk membeli sokongan rakyat. Sememangnya BN membeli undi.

Perkara 20: Tanah, Hutan, Kerajaan Tempatan dan lain – lain
Peruntukan Perundangan Persekutuan di dalam Majlis Tanah Kebangsaan (National Land Council) tidak boleh diguna pakai di Sarawak. Oleh itu Majlis Kebangsaan (National Council) untuk Kerajaan Tempatan juga tidak seharusnya dipakai. Mengapa kerajaan pusat mengambil alih sumber minyak dan gas asli? Sekiranya perlu, mengapa pula negeri diberikan royalti hanya 5% sahaja? Banyak permintaan untuk menaikkan royalti kepada 20% pula tidak pernah dilayan oleh PM. Itulah harga yang patut dibayar atas kesilapannya dan dia akan kehilangan undi Dayak.

Sekiranya PM ingin menjadikan Sarawak sebagai jelapang padi, diharap para pelabur tidak akan MERAMPAS hak milik tanah di Sarawak. Pelabur tidak perlu memiliki tanah. Mereka Cuma perlu membayar sewa kepada kerajaan dan mengupah pekerja tempatan serta memelihara alam semulajadi bagi menempatkan pertanian raksasa ini. Berilah kontrak dan latihan kepada penduduk tempatan.

Terserah kepada pembaca untuk membuat tafsiran terhadap apa yang berlaku di Sarawak dan menilai sama ada kerajaan Persekutuan berpejang pada janji dalam melaksanakan perjanjian 20 Perkara.

The agreement ( English Version )

Point 1: Religion
While there was no objection to Islam being the national religion of Malaysia there should be no State religion in North Borneo, and the provisions relating to Islam in the present Constitution of Malaya should not apply to North Borneo

Point 2: Language
a) Malay should be the national language of the Federation
b) English should continue to be used for a period of 10 years after Malaysia Day
c) English should be an official language of North Borneo for all purposes, State or Federal, without limitation of time.

Point 3: Constitution
Whilst accepting that the present Constitution of the Federation of Malaya should form the basis of the Constitution of Malaysia, the Constitution of Malaysia should be a completely new document drafted and agreed in the light of a free association of states and should not be a series of amendments to a Constitution drafted and agreed by different states in totally different circumstances. A new Constitution for North Borneo (Sabah) was of course essential.

Point 4: Head of Federation
The Head of State in North Borneo should not be eligible for election as Head of the Federation

Point 5: Name of Federation
“Malaysia” but not “Melayu Raya”

Point 6: Immigration
Control over immigration into any part of Malaysia from outside should rest with the Central Government but entry into North Borneo should also require the approval of the State Government. The Federal Government should not be able to veto the entry of persons into North Borneo for State Government purposes except on strictly security grounds. North Borneo should have unfettered control over the movements of persons other than those in Federal Government employ from other parts of Malaysia into North Borneo.

Point 7: Right of Secession
There should be no right to secede from the Federation

Point 8: Borneanisation
Borneanisation of the public service should proceed as quickly as possible.

Point 9: British Officers
Every effort should be made to encourage British Officers to remain in the public service until their places can be taken by suitably qualified people from North Borneo

Point 10: Citizenship
The recommendation in paragraph 148(k) of the Report of the Cobbold Commission should govern the citizenship rights in the Federation of North Borneo subject to the following amendments:

a) sub-paragraph (i) should not contain the proviso as to five years residence
b) in order to tie up with our law, sub-paragraph (ii)(a) should read “7 out of 10 years” instead of “8 out of 10 years”
c) sub-paragraph (iii) should not contain any restriction tied to the citizenship of parents – a person born in North Borneo after Malaysia must be federal citizen.

Point 11: Tariffs and Finance
North Borneo should retain control of its own finance, development and tariff, and should have the right to work up its own taxation and to raise loans on its own credit.

Point 12: Special position of indigenous races
In principle, the indigenous races of North Borneo should enjoy special rights analogous to those enjoyed by Malays in Malaya, but the present Malays’ formula in this regard is not necessarily applicable in North Borneo

Sarawak Perlu Peruntukan Laksana Inisiatif ICT

Sarawak masih memerlukan lebih banyak peruntukan daripada kerajaan persekutuan untuk melaksanakan lebih banyak inisiatif Teknologi Maklumat dan Komunikasi (ICT) kata Menteri Perancangan dan Pengurusan Sumber Kedua Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

Menurut beliau ia bagi merapatkan lagi jurang digital di negeri ini agar tidak ketinggalan dalam menikmati kemudahan memandangkan Sarawak negeri terbesar di Malaysia dan memerlukan bantuan daripada kerajaan persekutuan terutamanya dalam program ICT.

“Sarawak merupakan negeri yang mempunyai geografi yang besar berbanding negeri lain di Malaysia dan kita amat memerlukan kerjasama daripada kerajaan persekutuan bagi mencapai matlamat kerajaan iaitu 50 peratus pencapaian penembusan jalur lebar pada penghujung tahun 2010 di seluruh negara,” katanya berucap dalam Majlis Pelancaran MyIX dan Pusat Jalur Lebar Komuniti (PJK) Peringkat Negeri di Dewan Masyarakat Lundu, di sini semalam.

Malah kerajaan negeri kata beliau dalam usaha merapatkan jurang digital bandar dan luar bandar telah melancarkan Inisiatif Jalur Lebar Luar Bandar Sarawak (SRBI) agar masyarakat khasnya di luar bandar dapat menikmati kemudahan ICT sama seperti penduduk bandar.

Awang Tengah yang juga Menteri Kemudahan Awam berkata, beliau amat berharap kerajaan persekutuan bekerjasama dengan Suruhanjaya Komunikasi Multimedia Malaysia (SKMM) dan Sacofa untuk membina kira-kira 200 menara telekomunikasi di kawasan pedalaman seluruh negeri bagi tujuan kemudahan ICT.

Maxis Launches Unity Solutions

Maxis Bhd’s (Maxis) launched its revolutionised business service here yesterday, Unity Solutions, targeting 30,000 new customers for this new mobile unified communications service by the end of this year.

Unity Solutions, which offers seamless connectivity across different systems, devices and applications, will enable businesses to be managed more efficiently and cost effectively.

Maxis vice-president and head of enterprise and carrier business division, Fitri Abdullah told reporters during the press conference that, “Since Unity Solutions’ soft launch early December last year, we have registered 1,300 users for this service.”

Head of commercial and SME business for Maxis, Kenneth Lee, explained that 85 per cent out of its initial 1,300 users that signed up were by SME’s.

“With the good feedback we got from this product since its soft launch, we are looking at a possible take up rate of up to 30,000 customers by the end of this year,” said Fitri.

He told The Borneo Post that the company expected East Malaysia to contribute three to five thousand out of that sum or 10 to 15 per cent of the total amount targeted.

“We are seeing a steady growth from our East Malaysian market year by year and we are progressively working towards making it better”.

Fitri further stated that Maxis will be launching four to five other products under the ‘Unity’ theme for this year.

The Unity Solutions is touted to be a strong business tool as it reduces infrastructural and operational costs whereby it leverages on high mobile penetration to reduce traditional business overheads.

The integrated solutions that form Unity Solutions was designed with SME’s in mind but it can also serve large enterprises as well as multinational corporations.

Fitri expressed that he saw big take up potential coming from the SME’s as this has been the trend since the product’s soft launch last year.

Maxis will be announcing its fourth quarter financial results in two weeks’ time.

Maxis Deal With Chong Wei And Misbun

Malaysia’s leading mobile communications provider, Maxis Berhad (Maxis) yesterday signed a sponsorship deal with Malaysian badminton greats, Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Datuk Misbun Sidek.

The duration of the sponsorship will be from January to December this year.

Pumping In RM470 Million

Minister of Inform-ation Communication and Culture Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim admits that broadband penetration of 19.3 per cent in Sarawak is low.
He said this may soon be a thing of the past as the government was pumping in RM470 million under ‘Pemberian Perkhidmatan Sejagat’ (PPS) programme to bridge the digital gap in the state.

Under the programme, the state would get two centres for the disabled (OKU), six centres for Community Broadband and 37 libraries equipped with broadband facilities, he said.

On top of this, he pointed out that 203 telecom-munication towers would be constructed in remote areas throughout the state by this year.

He said such effort was to help achieve the national target of 50 per cent broadband penetration by 2010.

“As of now, broadband penetration in the nation is 31.4 per cent and our target is 50 per cent by 2010, which means, we still have 11 more months to achieve the goal.

“The 19.3 per cent in Sarawak is still low and that is why we have to build more telecommunication towers to enhance the usage of broadband.

“I am confident that, together with Sarawak and Sabah, we will be able to enjoy better Internet facilities so as to achieve the set target,” he told a news conference after launching the state-level Malaysia Internet Exchange (MyIX) and Community Broadband Centre at Dewan Masyarakat here yesterday.

Rais said the government was also looking at a scheme to offer computers at as low as RM900 per unit to further encourage usage of broadband among local populace to help realise the government’s objective of building a knowledgeable and ICT society.

“Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) will monitor these affordable products to ensure quality and speed,” he assured.

Earlier during the launching, Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said the state needed more fund from the federal government to implement more ICT initiatives aimed at bridging the digital gap.

“Sarawak is big, and in view of geographical factors, we need the collaboration of the federal government to enhance communication infrastructure to achieve the set target of 50 per cent penetration.

“State government is committed towards bridging digital gap between urban and rural areas, that is why we have launched Sarawak Rural Broadband Initiatives (SRBI) to enable rural folks to enjoy ICT facilities,” he said.

Tengah said for the time being, the state had about 500 telecommunication towers to support ICT activities.

He said he was pleased that the federal government would work closely with SKMM and Sacofa to build some 200 telecommunication towers more in remote areas state-wide.

Tengah, who is also Minister of Public Utilities, believed that with MyIX launched, Sarawak would be a step closer to popularising broadband among its people in order to stay globally connected.

Huraikan bagaimana James Brooke dan Charles Brooke Berjaya menguasai sebahagian besar tanah jajahan Kesultanan Brunei dari tahun 1839 hingga 1905.

PENGENALAN
Pulau borneo terletak ditengah-tengah laluan perdagangan yang luas dan mengungtungkan. Selain itu,pulau borneo juga merupakan hak Kesultanan Brunei. Kawasan jajahannya terlalu luas menyebabkan susah ditadbir dan dikawal. Oleh itu berlakunya pelbagai kekacauan yang timbul terutamanya di Sarawak. Namun demikian, Kerajaan Brunei merupakan sebuah empayar yang kuat ketika itu.

Hal ini dapat dibuktikan dengan beberapa siri serangan ke atas brunei oleh sepanyol tapi dapat dipatahkan. Kerajaan Sultan Brunei menjadi lemah disebabkan kemangkatan Sultan Bolkiah pada kurun ke- 16. Peristiwa ini menyebabkan para pembesar tempatan mengambil kesempatan dan berebut-rebut kawasan jajahan seperti yang berlaku pada kurun ke -18 dan ke -19.

Sebelum kehadiran rejim Brooke , diperairan borneo terdapat kuasa-kuasa asing seperti belanda dan sepanyol.Sarawak merupakan sebahagian jajahan Sultan Brunei sebelum kedatangan Brooke. Pelbagai kekacauan yang timbul terutama di bahagian hujung selatan Sarawak iaitu kuching. Kuching ditadbir oleh pembesar yang dilantik oleh Sultan Brunei iaitu Pangiran Mad Salleh atau dengan gelaran Pangiran Indera Mahkota beliau dilantik sebagai gabenor Sarawak. Kehadiran beliau tidak disenangi oleh datuk-datuk melayu di kuching.

Oleh itu, berlakunya pemberontakan yang diketuai oleh Pangiran Usop yang membuat pakatan dengan para pembesar tempatan pada tahun 1963. Kekacauan tercetus di kawasan sungai saribas dan skrang di kalangan orang iban. Bagi menteteramkan keadaan, sultan Umar Ali Saifuddin menghantar Pengiran Muda Hasyim ke kuching pada tahun 1837. Namun demikian, beliau gagal untuk memulihkan keamanan sehinggalah ketibaan seorang Inggeris yang bernama Brooke. Kehadiran Brooke juga merubah dan membentuk sejarah Sarawak.

Latar Belakang dan Kedatangan James Brooke
James Brooke dilahirkan di Banares, pada 29 April 1803 di India. Ketika itu bapanya sedang berkhidmat dengan Syarikat Hindia Timur Inggeris. Pada usia dua belas tahun ia dihantar bersekolah di England. Semasa beliau belajar secara kebetulannya pelajaran itu telah diwartakan sebagai satu pengukuran pangkat dalam tentera Bengal bagi tahun 1819.

Selepas tamat pengajian James Brooke juga telah berkhidmat dengan cemerlang dalam Perang Inggeris-Belanda yang pertama dalam dan pada awal tahun 1825, ia mendapat cedera parah lalu dihantar pulang ke negeri asal. Apabila bapa James Brooke meninggal dunia, Beliau meninggalkan wang sebanyak 30,000 paun kepada anaknya James Brooke.

Pada mulanya ia tidak tahu apa yang harus dibuat dengan wang sebanyak itu, Namun pada bulan Mac 1836, James Brooke membeli sebuah kapal layar yang bernama Royalist dengan muatan 142 tan dan dilengkapi dengan senjata. Kemudiannya beliau belayar ke timur dan sampai ke Singapura pada tahun 1938 dan diminta oleh Gabenor George Borham untuk ke Kuching bagi meyampaikan ucapan terima kasih kepada Pangiran Muda Hasyim kerana membantu kapal Inggeris yang terdampar di pantai Sarawak.

Tujuan utama brooke belayar ke timur kerana untuk membuat penyiasatan saintifik. Beliau juga amat meminati Sir Stamford Raffles dan ia yakin pengunduran Syarikat Hindia Timur dari jawa adalah satu kesilapan besar. James Brooke sampai ke Sarawak pada 15 ogos 1839 dan berlabuh di sungai Sarawak dan bertentangan dengan rumah pengeran Muda Hasyim.

Ini adalah pertemuan kali pertama James dengan Pengeran Muda Hasyimdan lalu memberikan hadiah dan surat ucapan terima kasih kepada pengeran Muda Hasyim yang dikirim dari gabenor dan dewan perniagaan singapura atas jasa baik beliau menolong kelasi-kelasi kapal Inggeris yang karam di perairan Sarawak. Mereka juga menjalinkan hubungan persahabatan sejak pertemuan pertama tersebut.

Perluasan Kuasa James Brooke
James Brooke melancarkan beberapa usaha dan strategi untuk meluaskan kawasannya ke utara dan mengukuhkan kedudukannya di Sarawak dengan membantu Pengeran Muda Hasyim menyelesaikan masalah pemberontakan yang dilakukan oleh pengeran usop dan melalui perjanjian yang dilakukan oleh Brooke tidak menerimanya tetapi setelah ditawarkan beberapa kali oleh Pegeran Muda Hasyim barulah beliau menerimanya dan dilantik menjadi Residen Sarawak.

Walaupun brooke dilantik menjadi Residen oleh Hasyim tetapi beliau tiada kuasa untuk melantik James Brooke menjadi Gabenor Sarawak kerana beliau bukanlah Sultan Brunei. Hal ini, menyebabkan Pengeran Muda Hasyim diancam oleh James Brooke. Pada 24 september 1841 Brooke meluaskan kuasanya dengan cara ugutan. Beliau telah mengepung tempat kediaman Pengeran Muda Hasyim dengan tekanan ketenteraan yang dibantu oleh H.M.S Diana.

Oleh sebab takut pemberontakan tersebut tercetus semula Pengeran Muda Hasyim telah memperkenankan permintaan brooke. Selain itu, Brooke juga telah mengugut Sultan Brunei sekiranya enggan untuk mengiktirafnya sebagai Raja Sarawak dengan mengugut untuk membedil Bandar Brunei dengan kapal H.M.S. Phglegethon. Pada 21 Disember 1845, Pengeran Muda Hasyim dan saudara-maranya telah dibunuh oleh orang-orang anti inggeris yang diketuai oleh Pangeran Muda Usop.

Kematian Pegeran Muda Hasyim membawa pelayaran sekali lagi ke Brunei untuk menentukan kedudukan kuasanya di Sarawak. Brooke menggunakan peluang ini untuk mendapatkan pengiktirafan sepenuhnya ke atas Sarawak tanpa membayar ufti tahunan kepada Sultan Brunei.

Usaha yang seterusnya yang dilakukan oleh james brooke ialah menjalankan dasar anti pelanunan. Brooke juga mepunyai angkatan tentera daripada penduduk pribumi yang dianggotai oleh orang-orang muda seramai 25,000 yang berada di sekitar sungai Batang Lupar, Saribas dan sungai lain-lain. Tentera rakyat ini mudah sahaja menyahut seruan rajah, kerana kemungkinan mendapat hadiah yang paling berharga dalam peperangan iaitu kepala musuh.

James Brooke melancarkan serangan ke atas orang iban di sungai seribas dan skrang pada julai 1843, kerana Orang Kaya Pemancha iaitu ketua orang iban mencabar kewibawaan brooke sebagai pemerintah dengan mengancam untuk memenggalkan kepala James Brooke. Hal ini menyebabkan James Brooke merasa tercabar lalu meminta bantuan daripada Sir Henry Keppel untuk melancarkan serangan ke atas orang iban kerana kekuatan orang iban adalah seramai 800 orang hasil gabungan dengan orang melayu, Keppel mengunakan kapal perang H.M.S Dido untuk melancarkan serangan.

Komander Farquhar juga membantu brooke dengan melancarkan beberapa strategi sehingga memerangkap orang iban dan berlaku petempuran yang dahsyat dengan menggunakan kapal perang Nemesis akhirnya pihak lanun kalah dalam pertempuran. Hasil pertolongan daripada angkatan tentera british james brooke dapat membasmi lanun yang selama ini menentang pemerintahannya sebagai raja Sarawak. Brooke juga berjaya melemahkan benteng pertahanan utama lanun terutamanya di padeh,paku dan rimbas.

Beliau juga dapat menguasai dan meluaskan tanah jajahannya seperti dikawasan sungai skrang dan saribas. Setelah James Brooke berjaya menumpaskan orang-orang melayu dan iban, pembesar orang melayu dan ketua orang iban saribas perlu menandatangani satu perjanjian. Dimana mereka tidak dibenarkan melanun dan memberontak pada masa akan datang.

Seterusnya Brooke telah memisahkan petempatan antara orang melayu dan orang iban. Kerana takut aktiviti perlanunan berulang kembali. Hal ini, disebabkan orang iban mudah dipengaruhi oleh orang melayu turut sama dalam aktiviti perlanunan. Orang melayu ditempatkan di kawasan berhampiran pantai dan kuala-kuala sungai seperti Saribas, Paku dan Lingga., manakala orang iban pula ditempatkan di kawasaan yang agak jauh sedikit dengan pantai dan kuala-kuala sungai.

Usaha yang seterusnya, James Brooke membuat perjanjian dengan Sultan Abdul Mumin yang menaiki tahkta setelah kemangkatan Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II pada tahun 1952. Menurut perjanjian ini brooke hanya perlu mebayar ufti sebanyak Dolar Selat$ 1500. Setelah perjanjian tersebut, Brooke telah berjaya meluaskan jajahannya di Sarawak dengan menguasai lembah Sungai Lupar dan Rajang.

Masalah pemberontakan orang cina pada 1857 telah menjejaskan pentadbiran brooke disarawak. Hal ini berlaku disebabkan mereka tidak berpuas hati dengan pencerobohan kuasa yang dilakukan oleh brooke. Orang-orang cina ini terdiri daripada puak san-tiou-kou dan merupakan pelombong-pelombong emas yang datang dari Bau lalu menyerang Kuching. Malangnya brooke dapat mematahkan serangan tersebut dengan mudah dengan bantuan orang Melayu dan Iban.

Pada masa yang sama, masalah eksport sagu telah menjejaskan sumber kewangan brooke. Puak anti-Brooke telah berpakat dengan pangeran kawasan melanau untuk menyekat perdagangan sagu para pedagang Sarawak iaitu melayu dan cina. Keadaan menjadi tegang apabila konsul british iaitu Spenser St. John campur tangan dan berjaya menyelesaikan ketegangan tersebut. Akhirnya satu perjanjian telah dibuat antara Sultan Brunei dan brooke.

Dalam perjanjian tersebut seluruh kawasan melanau sehingga Bintulu diserahkan kepada kerajaan Sarawak dan brooke perlu membayar ufti tahunan sebanyak Dolar Selat $4500 kepada Sultan Brunei. Setelah kematian brooke pada 11 jun 1868 segala urusan pentadbiran Sarawak diambil alih oleh anak saudaranya iaitu Charles Brooke.

Usaha-usaha yang telah dijalankan oleh Charles brooke untuk meluaskan kuasanya di Sarawak.
Charles Brooke anak saudara kepada James Brooke dan memerintah Sarawak hampir 48 tahun. Beliau dilantik menjadi Raja Sarawak kedua pada 3 ogos 1868 dan mengangkat sumpah pada 11 okterber 1868.Beliau seorang yang permurah tetapi berpendirian tegas.Charles juga dianggap seorang yang berfikiran terbuka, cergas dan menggunakan kewarasan politik dalam pentadbiran.Tugas utama Charles ialah untuk menyusun pentadbiran memastikan kerajaan tidak banyak berhutang seperti zaman bapa saudaranya.

Beliau juga menjalankan dasar berjimat cermat dalam permerintahannya.
Sarawak dibahagikan kepada tiga bahagian, setiap bahagian ditadbir oleh seorang residen (Eropah) dengan dibantu oleh seorang penolong residen dan pegawai daerah. Bagi pentadbiran anak negeri, ketua-ketua tempatan orang melayu, cina dan dayak terus dikekalkan. Ketua-ketua ini dilantik oleh residen. Masalah-masalah dalam masyarakat akan dikendalikan oleh ketua masyarakat masing-masing. Kadang kala raja sendiri terpaksa campur tangan apabila masalah yang timbul melibatkan antara dua kaum atau lebih.

Charles brooke juga membawa masuk mubaligh-mubaligh Kristian yang bermazhab Roman Katolik. Tugas mubaligh adalah untuk mengkristiankan penduduk tempatan terutamanya pendudk yang masih mengamalkan agama animisme. Selain itu,beliau mewujudkan sekolah-sekolah dan beberapa kemudahan yang lain.

Dalam perkara ini, beliau memang bersikap sebagai seorang yang imperialis. Charles tidak begitu berminat untuk menambahkan kekayaan Negara tetapi beliau lebih cenderung untuk meluaskan jajahan Sarawak. Charles menjalankan dasar perluasan kuasa ke arah utara ini iaitu bermula sejak zaman Raja Putih pertama lagi dan disambung oleh Charles Brooke. Beliau telah meminta daerah Baram daripada Sultan Brunei pada awal tahun 1868, sebagai gantinya baginda akan mendapat bayaran yang swajarnya setiap tahun. Selain itu, Charles juga merancang hendak menambah kawasan pantai Sarawak supaya menjadi seratus batu panjang.

Walaubagaimana pun segala permintaan dan cadangan Charles brooke ditolak oleh Sultan Brunei dan baginda meminta perlindungan daripada Gabenor Pope-Hennessy yang merupakan Konsul Jeneral British bagi borneo dengan mendakwa bahawa brunei berhak mendapat perlindungan British dibawah persetiaan tahun 1847. Charles brooke menjadi marah dan setelah masalah itu dapat diselesaikan, Charles mencuba sekali lagi untuk mendapatkan Baram.

Pada tahun 1883, orang Kayan yang mendiami kawasan Sungai Baram bangun menentang kerajaan Brunei. Hal ini menyebabkan , beliau mudah untuk mendapatkan daerah tersebut atas desakan rakyat yang tidak mahu berlindung dibawah pemerintahan Brunei. Charles berjaya mendapatkan Baram dan seluruh lembangan sungai Baram daripada Sultan Brunei dengan bayaran ufti sebanyak $4,200 setahun. Sultan Brunei menyerahkan pula daerah Sungai Terusan tanpa sebarang bayaran setelah gagal mengatasi masalah kekacauan di situ.

Manakala limbang pula, sejak tahun 1884 lagi penduduk limbang yang bersepadan dengan Brunei, telah memberontak melawan pemerintahnya kerajaan Brunei. Kerana penduduk di Limbang tidak tahan menanggung penderitaan dan kezaliman pembesar brunei yang memerintah di Limbang. Pemberontakan tersebut telah berlaku sejak sekian lama, namun tidak dapat mengubah sikap pembesar Brunei tersebut. Akhirnya pada bulan mac tahun 1890 penduduk dilimbang telah mengibarkan bendera kerajaan Sarawak.

Penduduk limbang meminta Charles Brooke mengambil Limbang menjadi wilayah baru di Sarawak, dengan kebenaran kerajaan british di England Charles Brooke telah berjaya mendapat daerah Limbang. Wilayah yang seterusnya yang diperolehi oleh Charles Brooke ialah daerah Lawas. Maka dengan ini lengkaplah sudah perluasan kuasa Charles Brooke ke atas Sarawak.

Kesimpulan
James Brooke berjaya menguasai 2/3 tanah jajahan di sarawak dengan beberapa usaha yang dijalankan seperti membuat perjanjian,ugutan terhadap Sultan Brunei dan memerangi lanun-lanun yang memberontak di Sarawak.Selain itu, dengan peralatan kapal perang yang canggih memudahkan lagi proses pengambilan wilayah dan tanah jajahan di Sarawak.

Di tambah dengan sokongan daripada pembesar tempatan iaitu Pengiran Muda Hasyim menyebabkan James brooke tidak mempunyai masalah untuk menjadi seorang Rajah di Sarawak. Setelah kematian beliau anak saudaranya iaitu Charles Brooke mengambilalih pemerintahan di Sarawak.

Naib Presiden Maxis, Mohamed Fitri Abdullah, berkata idea untuk menjalinkan kerjasama dengan LUCT ini timbul selepas mengadakan lawatan ke kampus LUCT di Cyberjaya, akhir tahun lalu.

Katanya, hasil pertemuan itu dan melihat kepada profil kecemerlangan LUCT, Maxis merangka satu pelan khas untuk memperkenalkan kecanggihan aplikasi dimiliki Apple iPhone bagi kegunaan dan kemudahan kakitangan dan pelajar universiti itu.

“Maxis sangat gembira kerana pihak LUCT memberikan tindak balas segera terhadap cadangan dikemukakan. Tempoh sebulan yang diambil pihak pengurusan LUCT membuktikan mereka komited terhadap idea kami dan profesional dalam membuat keputusan.
