Broadband Penetration Rate Surpasses Target

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia is getting closer to reaching its 50 per cent target of broadband penetration rate by 2010 in the domestic sector, having reached 31.4 per cent, surpassing the 30 per cent target set for this year.Minister of Information, Communications, Culture and Arts Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim who was informed of the latest figure by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), said that another 18.6 per cent penetration rate was required to meet the full target.

“Therefore, I am confident that the 50 per cent target by end of 2010 will be an easy reach..Indeed, we might surpass the expectation,” he told reporters.

Maxis Introduce FB2 Mobile

Maxis Berhad (Maxis) has become the first mobile communications service provider in Malaysia to provide a full range of mobile services to the top three Social Networking Services (SNS) in Malaysia, namely Facebook, Twitter and Friendster, following the launch of ‘fb2mobile’.The new service allows Maxis connects its mobile subscribers to Facebook and Twitter via SMS and MMS.

Maxis had previously launched the Friendster Alert service in May 2009 that allows subscribers to receive updates on their Friendster account via SMS.

For only RM2 a month, the ‘fb2mobile’ service allows customers who are Facebook members to keep in touch with friends at the touch of a button using their mobile phones.

Best of all, this service is available to all customers, not just those with a smart phone.

Anyone with a phone capable of sending and receiving SMS may subscribe to fb2mobile.

Customers with a Facebook account simply need to send “ON FB” to 23223 (which denotes 2FACE on a normal phone keypad) to register for the service.

The Axiata Group is regarded as a good proxy to the earnest recovery in global macroeconomic conditions and its unique value proposition via the footprint in some of the fastest growing mobile markets in South East Asia.

Celcom has executed commendably and is slated to be a formidable player in a steady and maturing 3-player 3G market, according to OSK Research Sdn Bhd. It believed that the surrent valuation dynamics for the sector are too focussed on domestic yield plays (relisted Maxis versus DiGi) with little recognition accorded for Axiata’s superior longer term growth prospects.

The continuing strong execution at Celcom, its wholly-owned mobile subsidiary, is the key to further re-rating of the stock. The research firm pointed out that the country’s second largest mobile operator is on a strong comeback trail, having expanded its mobile market at the expense of its competitors since the second half of 2008.

Maxis Tambah HSPA+ Pada 3G Network

Pada hari yang lalu Maxis mengumumkan bahawa mereka akan menambahkan High-Speed Packet Access + (HSPA +) ke dalam rangkaian mereka dan dengan itu membolehkan kelajuan download sampai 21Mbps..boleh tahan haha... Pada permulaan, pengguna di kawasan Klang Valley dan Johor Bahru akan menikmati peningkatan kelajuan download.

HSPA+ ialah rangkaian baru yang terdiri daripada High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) dan High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA). Maxis percaya bahawa rangkaian HSPA+ boleh menyokong kelajuan hingga 10-15Mbps pada kawasan liputan yang baik. Namun bergitu mereka masih belum lagi tentang kelajuan uploadnya pula.

Saya rasa kalau upload 2Mbps pun dah cukup.

TM Still Lags In Broadband Offerings

Despite encouraging results in the year’s third quarter, national telecommunica-tion (telco) operator Telekom Malaysia Bhd ™ is still lagging in terms of market share in the broadband segment.For the period, TM posted a net profit of RM179.1 million on the back of RM2.1 billion in revenue. This translated into a strong year-over-year rise of 208 per cent in profit over its loss of RM165.8 million last year. Revenue grew by 1.9 per cent from RM2.06 billion in corresponding period last year.

However, it faces stiff competition from other telco providers when it comes to broadband offerings.

OSK Research Sdn Bhd noted that TM’s broadband additions have been on the decline for five consecutive quarters. In the third quarter, its subscriber addition fell to just 28 kilobytes (k) from 37k in the preceding quarter. It cited short September month and higher delinquency as reasons for the fall.

Celcom Targets 200 Sites For 2G/3G "Sarawak"

Celcom Malaysia Bhd (Celcom) through its leading mobile prepaid brand Xpax is aiming at implementing another 200 potential 2G and 3G (second and third generation) sites in Sarawak by next year.Currently, the telecommunication service provider has over 300 3G sites throughout the state including outskirts areas like Sri Aman, Serian, Limbang, Lawas, Kanowit, Kapit, Sarikei, Mukah and Tatau. Moreover, its Xpax brand has a subscribers’ base close to eight million users nationwide.

Its vice-president for Sarawak region Choo Meng Chung told this to reporters recently, adding that Internet or broadband usage has now become a universal technology.

“Our younger generation is so different from our generation. Children who were considered to know little and termed ‘baby’ during our times are into computers and Internet, even having their own blog sites (and) chatting with friends their own age in Yahoo or MSN. There are even schools that are looking into implementing the usage of notebooks and Internet as the source of learning.

Help Sarawak Rural Folk Go Online

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is to build more communication towers in Sarawak to enable more rural people to gain access to and utilise information and communication technology (ICT).

Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum said the towers would enable the people in many more longhouses and rural settlements, especially those near the state grid, to go online.

He spoke to Bernama on his return here Friday night after presenting eight computer sets from the commission to three longhouses -- Rh. Jana ak Sawing, Rh. Edward Sigie and Rh. Changgan -- in the Julau District at the Jana anak Sawing Longhouse in Batu Matop, Julau, near here.

MCMC Sarawak director Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin had said earlier that the commission hoped to build 257 more towers from next year to 2013 to provide for wider coverage.

"We have actually allocated a total budget of about RM500 million. We have so far built more than 400 towers state-wide under our broadband and community broadband centre initiatives," he had said.

Xpax To Light Up 60-foot Christmas Tree

Xpax, Malaysia’s leading mobile prepaid brand, is set to raise its 60-foot Christmas tree at Taman Kereta, Jalan Mata Kuching to spread the season’s cheer. DiGi To Raise Funds For Forest Project

As part of its Deep Green initiative, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (DiGi) is on a mission to raise funds to re-forest up to 120,000 square metres of the Kinabatangan forest. This two-month campaign, which began Dec 4, will see DiGi donating RM3 to WWF-Malaysia from each transaction through postpaid customer who opts for electronic billing and unsubscribe for paper billings.

DiGi is aiming to raise up a total of RM100,000 for the Kinabatangan Corridor of Life (K-CoL) reforestation project.

“This is an initiative that can reduce the climate impact of our customers and other key stakeholders by encouraging our postpaid customers to receive their monthly statement electro­nically instead of the usual paper bills,” according to Loh Keh Jiat, DiGi’s head of product marketing.

“The amount donated is what the customers have been paying every month for their itemised billing. Besides playing a role in conserving the country’s forest, the customers also get to reduce their monthly bill by RM3.

“Each contribution of RM3 can help to reforest an area equivalent to the size of 75 pieces of postpaid bill envelopes placed side-by-side – that’s approximately 3 square metres,” he explained.

Wider Network Utilisation For DiGi

Research house OSK Research Sdn Bhd forecast higher optimization of current network utilization for local telecommunications provider Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (DiGi), following its recent domestic roaming (DR) agreement with U Mobile Sdn Bhd (U Mobile).Under the DR agreement, U Mobile can access DiGi’s 2G (second generation) network for the provision of mobile services. Further, the agreement is valid for three years from its commercial launch and will be renewable for a period of two years thereafter.

OSK Research believed that the new agreement shows U Mobile’s confidence in Digi’s 2G/GPRS (general packet radio service) coverage of over 97 per cent of the population nationwide.

Moreover, the research house observed that DiGi’s agreement with U Mobile follows its first deal signed last May with Baraka Telecom Sdn Bhd (Baraka), a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) for a period of three years from Baraka’s commercial launch. It added that Baraka was previously reported as seeking the approval of the Malaysian Communi-cations and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for a licence to operate mobile services.

P1 Gets Seat On WiMAX Forum Board

Michael Lai, CEO of Packet One Networks (Malaysia) or P1, has been appointed to the WiMAX Forum’s board of directors.

The forum is an industry-led international organisation formed to certify and promote broadband wireless products based on the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) technology.

Lai’s appointment means that for the first time ever Malaysia will play a critical role in shaping the future of 4G (fourth generation) WiMAX wireless broadband.

P1 announced that no other incumbent telco in the country has been bestowed such an important role within the telecommunications industry.

According to P1, the appoinment firmly establishes Malaysia as a key regional and global WiMAX hub, helping to speed up the uptake and evolution of broadband and beyond.

“This is truly an opportunity for us to realise our vision of broadband for all. WiMAX will become the catalyst to connect the region to the world and allow us to be truly competitive,” Lai said.

HSBB Trial Moving Smoothly

More than 122 households in Bangsar, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam here are currently involved in a High Speed Broadband (HSBB) retail service trial.

The trial is part of Telekom Malaysia Bhd’s (TM) plan to roll out its commercial HSBB services in the four initial rollout areas by the end of Q1 in 2010.

TM said the trial will give it the opportunity to test its systems, processes, fibre installation methodology, etc, with an eye to providing an enhanced customer service experience when the commercial service is offered later in that quarter.

These “beta testers” are experiencing and enjoying network access speeds of 15Mbps (megabits per second) along with the related triple-play services of voice, video and high-speed Internet, TM announced.

TM has completed two pilot consumer studies to determine the best composition and pricing options for its proposed HSBB retail packages, which will comprise basic and add-on services.
